"I commend Governor Paterson on taking an important step to protect the rights of same-sex couples who are married in other jurisdictions by recognizing those unions. However, the Governor's directive is only the beginning. Not only should New York recognize and protect the rights of same-sex couples married in places like California, Massachusetts, and Canada, but the State Legislature should act to make true marriage equality the law in the State of New York."

New York, NY (May 29, 2008)--Luke Henry's State Assembly campaign today announced that it has hired petitioning expert Alan Zimmerman to direct its petitioning operation.

Zimmerman, who specializes in helping candidates overcome New York's outdated petition requirements and gain access to the ballot, brings over 35 years of New York political experience to the Henry team. He will work in close coordination with a grassroots network of volunteers.

No campaign for which Zimmerman has directed the petitioning operation has ever failed to get onto the ballot. This is no small accomplishment in New York, where candidates are often "bumped" from the ballot for failing to comply with meaningless technicalities. Zimmerman has run many successful petition operations in New York, including Charlie King's 2006 campaign for Attorney General, with over 50,000 signatures.

"After years of Speaker Silver's failed leadership, New York's petition requirements remain the worst in the nation, preventing even strong candidates from getting on the ballot," said Henry. "But I can't win this election and change the system unless I get on the ballot myself, and Alan Zimmerman has deep expertise in this area. We are excited that he has joined our team."

"Luke has lined up an impressive team of dedicated volunteers," said Zimmerman. "Working together, I am confident that we will be able to ensure that Luke gets on the ballot."

"Chinatown faces a host of pressing issues with respect to the health and safety of its citizens. Hazardous traffic conditions throughout the neighborhood are readily apparent. Speeding along the Bowery, several streets requiring buses to make sharp turns, and exceptionally busy intersections all pose a real danger. I have also received reports of used condoms and syringes discarded near local day care centers and senior centers. Street lighting is inadequate on certain blocks, particularly along Henry Street and East Broadway between Oliver and Pike streets. Because these and other hazardous conditions in Chinatown should be addressed now, I have written to the Department of Transportation, The Department of Mental Hygiene, and the New York City Police Department to alert these agencies immediately to specific areas of need."
